I've crossed the line

Sunday was a big day for me. First of all, I actually watched some of the Ravens/Steelers game. It's kind of a big deal. I thought it was physically impossible for me to focus on watching football, but I found a way.

Look how fast I am!
On the most boring apparatus in the world, the treadmill, 3 inches from the screen, with absolutely nothing to do but look at the game.

I tried out some new (to me) kinds of shoes and ran a total of 3 miles. This brought my weekly total to 18, which sounds pathetic, but that's six times my mileage from the previous week.

I felt I've been in a bit of a rut with meals lately, and was in the mood to try some new recipes. One of my favorite blogs, Crouton Queen, posted a delicious sounding combo of baked potato soup and beer bread. (I used a different beer bread recipe based on ingredients I already had but it wasn't the best).

The baked potato soup called for bacon, and based on my recent meat success eating fried turkey, I decided to go for it. Bacon was the gateway meat for me since going veg in 1997, but I've only had it cooked by someone else. I didn't even know where to find it in Wegmans. But I persevered, and the salty crispy bacon bits in my soup were well worth the search.

As long as I don't think of it as dead pig, I'm good.

And with that, I've crossed the threshold from an enabled "vegetarian" to a full blown hunter and gatherer. I'll have to get used to not telling people "I don't eat meat".

What's your favorite way to eat bacon?

  1. That is some funny looking bacon. Mine is usually more...stripy? Maybe I've been getting sub par bacon all this time?

That first picture really confused me. I thought you were running in front of a green screen. I need more sleep.

    1. Nope, definitely the picture. I slept for a zillion hours and I had to stare at it because I thought there was a race going on outside the "window." Yeah.

  2. Bacon! Yes, welcome to the dark side. Things are tastier over here.

I like it on sandwiches. And wrapped around veggies (like asparagus). Or crumbled with brussel sprouts. Or used like bread to sandwich avocado between 2 slices. THAT is amazing.

Soo impressed you actually made bacon. I think this means bacon should be available on Christmas morning

  6. My favorite way to eat bacon is with pancakes or waffles. Now I am hungry. Shoot. Need to schedule a cheat meal soon and make it breakfast food.

  8. See what happens when you run the WRONG 50-miler!? It destroys your diet.

Come back to Stone Mill next year and recover your purity.

Although I was looking at summer 50s for someone, and I saw "High Sierra 50" -- you know that title just sounds like a flat fast course.

  9. Yum, bacon. I get in a rut eating the same things too. I'd probably starve to death without cereal.

  10. Welcome to the dark side! Nice festive treadmill. Are the shoes...Nike frees? That's my guess based on the colors and what I can see through the blur of your speed.

    1. PS favorite bacon method: doesn't matter as long as it's crispy.
