When Running Gods Attack

So yesterday I was going to post, but I was at a math training all day and the most interesting thing I could think to tell my husband about my day was that I got to a new level of Angry Birds.

Even my workout was boring - 10 min bike, 30 min elliptical, a few weights, and then 6 Pack Abs Level 2. Although I lied on Monday, I must not have been doing it right, because it nearly killed me. I wore my heart rate monitor and at one point my HR was 174!

Today is tempo run day. I tend to get really anxious about it, like the running gods checked my tempo pace in McMillan and are following behind me ready to poke me with their pitchforks if I fall below speed. This is totally normal....right......RIGHT????

Ummmm....who wants to volunteer to teach me to use photoshop?

Anyway, this week I increased my mileage from 6 to 7, which means 5 tempo miles in the middle. This sort of crosses the barrier for me from "just a run" to "a longish run" so I had to do some prep work last night.

Hydration + a  Pre - Run Snack

Tempo runs are so hard! I guess that's the whole point, to get used to running faster than your comfort level speed. I read somewhere "If you want to become a faster runner, you need to run faster". As in, basically suck it up and get out there. I keep meaning to wear the heart rate thingie that comes with my garmin because I'm pretty sure its way up there.

My five tempo miles were:
8:32
8:32
9:04
8:29
8:33

So apparently I have learned a little about pacing except for that stupid third mile. I actually happened to glance down and see it and got really pissed and vowed it wouldn't happen again. It was up a pretty big hill.

On Mile 5 I really thought I was going to die, my legs were on fire, I couldn't catch my breath, and I felt like I was going to puke. But it was worth it to get the 8:33. All in the name of a marathon PR!

If you happened to be in my neighborhood early this morning and heard some profanity...its possible it might have been me. However, I have watched a girlfight directly outside my window that involved one girl yanking out another girl's weave....so other possibilities exist as well.

Planning on some Bikram tonight!

Do you do tempo runs? What do you think about them?

  1. LOL to you putting your camelbak in the fridge! That is hilarious!
I love tempo runs. Mostly because they're faster so I get the miles done sooner so the workout is over more quickly. That's probably not a good reason to love them though.

  4. I guess I'm the only person left that doesn't have an iphone. : ( Sad day.
I teach 4th grade math and I have to say our trainings always seem way to long, boring, and pointless. I usually catch up on people.com or something random on those days.
Good job on your run. I always have one mile that sneaks in there and makes me mad.

  5. Hi! New reader, you rock! I hate tempo runs, like HATE! I do mine on the treadmill because I am not all that great at pacing on the Garmin. Maybe I will work on that here soon :)

I like your photoshop skills ;)
