Have Mercy

Good news!

I got to go visit my new nephew, Harrison yesterday! My sister took him to visit my grandmother, who lives almost exactly halfway in between us. 6 hours in the car round trip for 5 hours of baby/family time? Worth it!

I'd pretty much do anything to spend a day with these two.
This means that my normal chatter about running will be made infinitely more interesting by infusing it with random unrelated adorable baby pictures. Also, I'm pleased the report that between the two of us, the baby did the most crying this time.

"I think, therefore I am"
I'm a big believer in the jinx, so I'm not going to say that my Achilles is healed, but I did run the past four days and haven't had any problems (knock on wood). Well, any problems with the Achilles.

Going back to work after my first actual summer off has been a little rough. Going from spending my days sitting on my ass to spending my days on my feet changing the world one adorable little pumpkin at a time is a big shift.

He gave me the side-eye when I tried to teach him the alphabet.

I also underestimated how much I would miss the ability to pee at will. My classroom has hovered around 90 degrees and I spend the day talking, but I avoid water at all costs because I don't need any extra challenges, and "trying not to pee my pants" is a pretty big one. As a result, I come home each night a dehydrated, sweaty mess, pretty similar to how I return from runs.

Lastly, it's a lot harder to run when I practically need the jaws of life to drag myself out of bed in the 4am hour. In the summer I blissfully slept as long as I wanted and only deigned to run when I felt fully and completely rested.

So basically that was three paragraphs with excuses for why I'm so slow. Here's a little recap.

Thursday: 6 miles, 10:33 pace
Friday:  10 mile, 9:53 pace
Saturday: 7 miles, 9:14 pace
Sunday: 10 miles, 10:04 pace

Harrison is not impressed.
I didn't do a long run this week. I was all ready to do it on Saturday before my trip, and then my alarm went off at 3:15 am. I was about to get up when it occurred to me that I had no plans on Monday, and I could do my long run at a normal people time then. That would even give me the additional benefit of not being sleep deprived and risking my life on the drive.

So I did this for 3 more hours.

I sure as hell am not in the habit of watching 7 minute videos of other people's grandmothers, but just go to the 6:15 mark and you will laugh, I promise.

Sunday morning I met Lily downtown for a 10 miler before my last long 5K coaching workout at 8:30. Then I went straight to work. Sounds gross, but it's really not when you change clothes and take a whore's bath with bubble gum scented wipes.

Plus, a girl came in and was all embarrassed because she came straight from the gym and was sweaty so I was all "don't worry, I ran 10 miles before I came here!" and then she felt right at home and bought shoes. It was really a selfless act to help the customers.

Eric and I are headed to San Francisco for a wedding this weekend. He's had to work every night this weekend, so I've used the alone time to do important research for our trip.

Uncle Jesse can stand in for my husband any time.

Unfortunately, I forgot how sad the first season is, and immediately ended up doing some Stepmom level crying with no tissues around. I'm not ashamed to admit that this wasn't the first time I made this mistake.

What movie/TV show is guaranteed to make you cry?
I cry at so, so many things but one random one that always gets me is the last Sex and the City episode when Miranda is giving her mother in law a bath. I'm tearing up just typing it. I catch the rerun on the style network and sob probably once a week.

If you've been to San Francisco, what should we do there?

  1. I only cried at tv shows when I was pregnant. We were rewatching Buffy and I lost it more than once. And I laughed at your grandma's comments at the aforementioned mark. I think I love her.

  2. Sounds like you had a great reason to postpone your long run! I wouldn't deal with having the inability to pee at will, never thought about that with a teacher!

  5. I love that you didn't think about doing your long run today until your alarm went off at 3am.

Harrison is adorable. I'm so glad you got a chance to get your baby fix!

Speak for yourself, I'm totally in the habit of watching long videos of other people's grandmothers. It's my main hobby beyond running.

I feel like bubblegum scented wipes would be the nastiest thing ever, but maybe only if you add in baby poop.

  8. Harrison! <3 him!

I'm pretty sure you know all the movies/tv shows that make me cry, but mainly:
-Titanic (mom telling story to kids)
    -Stepmom (the whole thing!)
-Father of the Bride (when it snows and when she gets the cappuccino maker)
    - Sex & the City (last episode, the bath and when Charlotte and Harry find out they get a baby)
    - Friends (when Monica proposes to Chandler)
-The Notebook (see Valentine's day post for reference)

  9. I'm going to have to agree with the other commenter re:the bubblegum wipes. I actually, physically backed away from the monitor when I saw those.
You put in some solid miles, this week, after an achilles issue. Screw the pace.
Your nephew is SO cute. Most of my babies were baldies so I'm partial to that look, anyway. ;)
I don't remember and sad Full House episodes. I must've totally blocked them out!

  10. You hit the nail on the head when you said "Stepmom level of crying" that seriously is my UGLY. CRY. Movie. omg, I love the movie, but it's so bad that I refuse to watch it anymore...Seriously. Everytime. Ugly. Cry. I keep expecting it to end differently.

  11. The hardest transition from summer to school is planning my pee trips. How ridiculous does that sound? I usually wait until about 20 minutes before a conference period or lunch and down a couple bottles of water.
Your nephew is so flippin cute! Everyone around me is having babies!! Just about the time I think I want one, someones kid starts crying and I decide I'm completely ok. I guess I would have to find some dumb sucker to hang around for a while, marry me then think about having a baby. I have a looooooooooong way to go!

  12. I couldn't get the sound to work on the video!

My runs have been pretty sad and slow, too, so at least we know we'll be in good company in less than four weeks! Holy crap!

I love full house. It used to be on at the perfect time in the mornings in the winter so I could run on the treadmill before work and watch two episodes.

My sister lives in San Fran, so if you run out of things to do (which I doubt), let me know and I'll call her for suggestions.

  13. Harrison is so precious and your sister looks great. Are you sure she had a baby so recently?!

I am my mother's daughter so I can cry at the drop of the hat about anything.
